There's a lot going on and it's hard to keep up! Check here for all the updates and ongoing information. Friends, we have to stick together if we're going to make things better for our community, state and country.
Most, if not all of you, were aware of the public hearing on November 5 (in person and virtual) regarding the proposed expansion of CAFO operations on Door County.
Here is a report on what happened in the meeting:  https://fox11online.com/news/local/neighbors-fight-proposed-expansion-of-door-county-farm-cite-impact-on-air-water-quality
Gilbert Farms is looking to get a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation, or CAFO, permit. This would allow the farm to expand its herd from around 1,440 animals to approximately 2,430. According to the Pulse about 300 people appeared at the in-person hearing and another 140 were on zoom. 53 spoke in opposition and 9 spoke in favor (I will say several of those in favor were not even Door County residents and were other dairy owners attesting that the Gilberts were good dairy farmers. That is NOT the issue!!! It is our shallow soil and karst bedrock.  All those in favor never mentioned how to deal with the lack of soil safely.)  Please get those comments in, public pressure is where we are now!! It is people power that got us this in-person hearing, the first one in over 5 years granted by the DNR in the entire state of Wisconsin. We need to continue to exert people power to make our voices heard. We see the potential threat to our drinking water, beaches and lakes and want the DNR to stop the expansion.  WE need to Stand UP and  SPEAK OUT!!!For more information please contact Annette Vincent  [email protected]
Here's what YOU can do: Protect Door County Water: Gilbert Farms WPDES Permit Hearing
WPDES Permit: WI-0067569-01-0
Comment Deadline: November 12, 2025
How to Submit Comments
● Email: [email protected]
● Mail: Brittiny Mueller, DNR, 2984 Shawano Ave, Green Bay, WI 54313
Include: WPDES permit number, your specific concerns, and a request that
the DNR address your concerns.
Why This Matters
Gilbert Farms Ltd. is seeking an after-the-fact WPDES permit for their facility
near Sturgeon Bay. This expansion could profoundly impact our groundwater,
wells, and local economy. Your public comment—brief or detailed—can help
protect our water, public health, property values, and quality of life.

Key Concerns
● Groundwater Vulnerability: Known sinkhole directly adjacent to
manure storage. Any breach could pollute our aquifer.
● Massive Manure Increase: Waste volume could quadruple, but fields
for spreading will not—raising risk of runoff and overapplication.
● Well & Waterway Contamination: Door County has a track record of
well contamination and waterway impairment due to CAFOs
● Local Economy at Stake: Tourism depends on clean water. Annual
agriculture GDP is $55M vs. over $600M (tourism, retail, etc.) in Door
County.
● Monitoring Delayed: DNR recommends groundwater monitoring, but
no wells required until 2029.
● Public Has Questions: DNR must do an environmental review for
major actions and share it publicly.
● Require Signed Landowner Agreements: Require signed
spreading/export agreements for all non-owned fields before permit
approval, with terms covering the 5-year permit window.

Making Good Trouble in Juddville on July 17 in memory of Rep. John Lewis

The Movement Continues
From mobilize at indivisible.org:  Good Trouble Lives On was a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we took action in Juddville and Sturgeon Bay.

From Robert B. Hubbell, July 18
There were more than 1,600 Make Good Trouble pro-democracy rallies across the United States on July 17. Collectively, they were a smashing success! Everyone who participated in person or in spirit should pat themselves on the back for a job well done! I have posted below a handful of photos sent by readers. (Apologies that I could not post them all; I ran out of time.)
Some rallies were large (New York, pic below) while others were small (Franconia, NH, pic below) but all were impactful and important Although it is risky to generalize from personal experience, the level of response from passing motorists at the rally Jill and I attended was at least as enthusiastic as on No Kings Day. Rally-goers addressed dozens of issues in their creative, humorous, and poignant signs. (See Jill’s photos and video of the rally we attended in Woodland Hills, CA, at Every Day with Jill, Good Trouble!)
Based on reader feedback, it appears that most of the rallies were smaller than those held on No Kings Day. That is understandable; the No Kings Day rallies were the largest single-day mass protests in American history. It is no cause for disappointment that every new protest is not the largest in history; indeed, it would be unrealistic to expect otherwise.
Rather, it is more important that we persist in our protests on a daily and weekly basis. The moment will come when an unexpected act of cruelty or corruption motivates millions of more Americans to take to the streets for the first time in their lives.
By standing on the roadside, in front of city halls, in senior recreation centers, and on college campuses, we are showing the path forward to others. Nothing is more important than that.
If you attended a rally on July 17, do not be shy about using social media to share your pro-democracy actions with friends, followers, and complete strangers! All objective evidence suggests that a substantial majority of Americans share your concerns about the threat to our democracy Be the example that teaches them that it is acceptable, possible, and urgent to stand up for democracy.
The pro-democracy rallies on Make Good Trouble Day were a smashing success! Keep up the good work!

It's in the record books...the turnout was amazing! Right here in Sturgeon Bay we had over 1100 people marching in the rally declaring we have had no kings since 1775, and we aren't about to start now! A huge shout out to all who participated on the 14th. The crowd was beautiful, the music inspiring, the chants motivational, and your comradery, kindness, and love was pervasive.

What a Turn Out! June 14, 2025

April 11 Town Hall without Tony Wied

Where's "Tody"? He couldn't be bothered to hold a town hall with his constituents! Instead, he subjected us to a phone town hall with Tom Tiffany, District 7, where he avoided answering most questions. Not satisfied with this copout, citizens of the eighth district invited him to join us, Friday, April 11. He turned us down, so the town hall went on without him. We brought our questions, and he did not come with answers.

April 5 Rally

APRIL 5 WAS THE PEOPLE'S DAY! THERE WERE SOME REALLY STRONG EMOTIONS EXPRESSED.

Resistance organizations across the nation will be hitting the streets proclaiming "Hey DOGE, keep your Hands off: Medicaid, Social Security, Medicare, Education, Agriculture, USAID, NOAA" --- the list unfortunately is virtually endless.

In Northeast Wisconsin we are rallying on Saturday April 5in Appleton along with other groups. 11:00 AM in Houdini Plaza. This is a day when we can flex our power. A day when we, the PEOPLE OF AMERICA, stand tall and say ENOUGH. STOP. Now we know Appleton, isn't just down the road a bit. But we also know that Door County folks travel to Green Bay and Appleton frequently for haircuts, doctor's and dentist's appointments, concerts, sporting events, Costco, etc.

So, we are asking folks to take a day trip for their country.  If millions can rally for democracy in Belgrade, Budapest, Paris, and throughout the world, certainly we can adjust our schedules and go to Appleton. We encourage all to be creative and make your own signs. The theme is "Hands Off (the program of your choice). We have seen creative signs at marches on TV. We can do it too. It's a chance to use that cardboard box that's in the way in the garage.

This will be a powerful statement to Tony Wied, Andre Jacque, and Joel Kitchens that N.E. Wisconsin is not putting up with this Republican Bullshit and we are not going to put up with them either if they go along with it.

April 5 is The People's Veto Day.  Please join the millions of people who will be standing up for democracy, their communities, their neighbors, and their own families.
